Tuscaloosa Whole Child: Making the Dream Work for Tuscaloosa County Youth & Educators
THE TCSS WHOLE CHILD APPROACH
The Whole Child approach is a systematic blueprint for sustainable change in children, citizens, and communities. Whole Child provides a comprehensive method for supporting students and teachers.
THE FIVE TENETS
The tenets are based on Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, with the idea that students cannot learn unless they are healthy and safe. Many parts of a child's life improve when they feel these things, and one key improvement is better academic performance.
Each student enters school healthy and learns about and practices a healthy lifestyle.
HEALTHY
Each student learns in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults.
SAFE
Each student is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community.
ENGAGED
Each student has access to personalized learning and is supported by qualified, caring adults.
SUPPORTED
Each student is challenged academically and prepared for success in college,
career, and participation in a global society.
